Questions about Scribe

Before your first conversation.
How do I install Scribe on my Mac?

A Mac running macOS 15 or newer, on Apple silicon or Intel. Download the installer and drag Scribe to Applications. The setup guide helps you download a speech model, check microphone and Mac audio, and optionally connect AI for summaries. Allow microphone and Screen & System Audio Recording access when asked. Calendar access is optional.

Is Scribe a free meeting notes app?

Yes. Scribe is free, open-source software under the MIT license. No account or subscription is required to record and transcribe. Tips are optional. If you choose a paid external AI provider, that provider may charge for API usage.

Can I transcribe meetings offline?

Recording and transcription work locally after you download a transcription model. AI summaries need a separately connected local model or an optional remote provider. Remote AI features require internet access.

Can I record Zoom, Teams, and Google Meet on Mac?

Yes. Scribe records your microphone and Mac system audio, so it works with Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet, and other meeting apps without a bot or browser extension. Grant microphone and Screen & System Audio Recording access during setup. Your Mac captures the audio it plays; Scribe does not depend on a meeting service integration.

Can I export meeting notes to Markdown or Obsidian?

Yes. Export personal notes and any available AI summary and Meeting Notes to Markdown. Your complete transcript is also saved separately as transcript.md in the meeting folder. Read, copy, and organize these plain files in Obsidian or another text editor. AI summaries require a connected model; reading your transcript does not.

How do AI meeting summaries work?

Connect a capable AI model to enable summaries, decisions, and action items. You can use a separately installed local model or configure a supported remote provider. Transcripts are available without an AI connection.

Can Scribe identify each meeting speaker?

Your microphone and Mac audio are recorded separately. Enter your name during setup, then name the other track or tag individual moments in a transcript. Speaker names are yours to confirm: Scribe does not read Zoom or Teams identities or automatically separate multiple voices on the call track.

Does Scribe record meetings automatically?

No. Scribe can offer a recording prompt when it notices a supported call, but recording starts only when you choose Record. Make sure everyone understands and agrees to recording as required for your conversation. Mac audio can include music and notifications, so pause other sounds when you want a clean track.
