Scribe

The recording guide

How to record meetings on a Mac.

A useful recording needs both sides: your microphone and the audio coming from your meeting app. Scribe captures them as separate tracks, then transcribes on your Mac.

Use this workflow for Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet, Slack huddles, FaceTime, Webex, Discord, or another conferencing app. Capture uses Mac system audio, so it does not require a meeting bot or browser extension. Before starting, tell everyone you plan to record and obtain the consent required for the conversation.

  1. Install Scribe and test both tracks.

Download Scribe for Mac, open the DMG, and drag Scribe to Applications. The universal installer supports Apple silicon and Intel Macs running macOS 15 or newer.

Follow guided setup. Allow Microphone access for your voice and Screen & System Audio Recording for the call audio. Calendar access is optional and helps with meeting titles; it is not required to capture a call.

Run the temporary 15-second microphone and Mac-audio test before an important meeting. Setup also prepares a local transcription model, which needs an initial internet download. You can choose audio-only mode and prepare transcription later. Reopen the guide through Settings → Review setup and test audio….

  2. Join your call, then choose Record.

Open your usual meeting app and check its microphone and output settings. Pause music and consider using Focus: other sounds your Mac plays during the recording, including notifications, can be included in the system-audio track.

In Scribe, choose Record. For supported calls, Scribe can offer a Record / Not now prompt. That prompt is an invitation; Scribe does not start recording on its own. You can also use Record when no prompt appears.

Keep participating in the meeting. Use Add note to capture a question, a decision to revisit, or context you want to remember. When the conversation ends, choose Stop in Scribe so the recording is saved and local processing can finish.

  3. Review the transcript and name speakers.

Open the saved meeting and listen back to important moments. Enter your own name in setup or Settings to label your microphone track in new recordings. Use Name speakers or click a speaker label to review the call track and confirm names.

The two tracks distinguish your microphone from the call audio. Scribe does not receive Zoom or Teams account identities and does not automatically separate several remote voices. For a group call, use individual speaker tags as you review; name the whole call track after one person only when that person is the sole remote speaker.

Transcripts do not need an AI connection. Summaries, decisions, and action items require an optional capable local or remote model. Check any generated notes against the recording before treating them as a final record.

If one side is missing

Review Scribe’s permissions in macOS System Settings → Privacy & Security, then repeat the setup audio test with the microphone you actually use. If the transcript is not ready, check that a transcription model is installed and selected. A saved audio-only recording and a finished transcript are different stages.

For a meeting away from the internet, prepare offline transcription before you disconnect. When the transcript and your notes are ready, export a Markdown record to keep with the project.

Stay in the conversation. Start with a short test call and see the full recording-to-notes workflow.
